This study aims to offer an understanding of Zambia, an overview of its life, an interpretation of its past and a view of its future prospects. It covers the period of Kenneth Kaunda’s leadership of the country as Prime Minister of Northern Rhodesia from January 1964 to his being voted out of office as President of Zambia in 1991. This interpretation is necessarily coloured by the ideas, attitudes, assumptions, reflexes and prejudices of the author. It does not claim to be dispassionately objective. It does, however, claim to offer an honest opinion, based on twenty years’ in Zambia, and on sympathy and respect for the country and its people.
